CASS donate to Mbuya Nehanda Children’s Home

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe student’s arm known as Chartered Accountants Students Society (CASS) handed over a donation of over $5000 to Mbuya Nehanda Children’s Home.

During the handing over ceremony conducted by the CASS President Mr. Arnold Chirombo on the 31st of March 2012, he underscored the need to plough back into the community.

“We believe that the training we get from our respective training offices is invaluable and that we should also extend that kind gesture by playing a part in changing the lives of the less privileged” he said.

CASS donated paint and electrical components such as fluorescent sets and cables for the boys’ hostel which required more attention than the other buildings. CASS members and the older children from the Home carried out the painting, under the guidance of hired professional painters. All other dwellings will be painted in order to make the home much more pleasant for the children.

CASS President also noted that the Home’s grinding meal which had been down for quite some time was fixed.

“It is intended that the grinding meal will be used for the Home’s personal use as well as servicing the surrounding community as an income generating unit for the Home” he said.

CASS’s vision for the Home is to ensure that it is self sustaining and support the current government grants and erratic donations from church organizations and some private organizations.

“In order to achieve our vision, we donated 100 day old chicks and the sufficient feeds until the chicks are fully grown” he said.

Mr. Chirombo added that “based on the outcome of this project, CASS intends to expand the poultry project and make it the key income generating activity for the Home”.

As in the past years, CASS donated groceries in the form of basic commodities to the tune of US$3,000. Among the groceries which had been specifically requested for the secondary school children.

CASS President paid tribute to the following firms for the continued support towards various CASS activities: KPMG, Ernest & Young, Grant Thornton Camelsa, AMG Global, HLB Ruzengwe & Co, Deloiite, BDO Zimbabwe and PriceWaterhouseCoopers

Brief Notes

Background

The Chartered Accountants Students Society (CASS) is an organization of students training towards the Chartered Accountancy profession and is arm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ). We believe that the training we get from our respective training offices is invaluable and that we should also extend that kind gesture by playing a part in changing the lives of the less privileged. We have thus identified Mbuya Nehanda Children’s Home as an organization that in need of our assistance.

Why Mbuya Nehanda

Mbuya Nehanda Children’s home is an organization that houses orphaned and abandoned children. It is located in Melfort, about 47km to the east of Harare. It is registered under the Social Services department and currently houses 51 children, 21 of which are over 12 years of age and are doing their secondary education. CASS has been supporting the home for the past 2 years and we have decided to build a long-term relationship with the home whereby we get to monitor the growth of the children until such a point in time that they can weaned off and create capacity for more needy children.
