What is an Accredited Training Office (ATO)?

A Training Office is an accredited organisation (in commerce and industry, or public practice or the public sector) that is approved by and registered with ICAZ to train Chartered Accountants. To meet the accreditation criteria, an Institution should have at least one Chartered Accountant within its structures and should apply for accreditation by contacting the following office: [email protected].

Articles at an ICAZ ATO

The ICAZ training programme is regulated by the ICAZ Training Regulations which pertain to trainee accountants. The Training regulations are a set of general provisions that govern the conduct of the training programme (download the ICAZ training regulations).

Confirmation by the trainee accountant that he/she has entered into a training contract with an ICAZ accredited training office must be done through registration of the training contract on the ICAZ website.  The training contract can either be for a 3-year period (accounting degree holders) or a 5-year training contract (A ‘level holders). Upon completion of the probationary period (3 months), the training contract becomes binding on both sides until completion of articles at any of the accredited training offices. 


How to register for a 5-year training contract

For one to pursue the CA program directly from high school after completing their A ‘level examinations, they should seek articles placement at any one of the ICAZ accredited training. The students is expected to obtain a BCompt degree in accounting with UNISA, thereafter they proceed to CTA levels 1 and 2 before they are eligible to sit for the final qualifying examinations.

The following is required upon registration:

  1. Consent form signed by the student and principal (has replaced the blue contract)
  2. Birth Certificate copy.
  3. National ID copy
  4. O Level Transcript or Certificate copy
  5. A Level Transcript or Certificate copy
  6. Payment of USD66 per student (training contract registration fee)

How to register for a 3-year training contract

The training contract for students with accounting degrees is 3 years. A degreed student can complete the following during the 36 months of training at an ATO, the Zimbabwe Certificate in Theory of Accounting (CTA) in the first year and/or second year and Qualifying Examinations (ITC and APC) in the third year. While training, a student will be working on a full – time job and will be expected to perform at a professional level. 

For one to pursue the CA program, they must have a full accounting degree.

  1. Consent form signed by the student and principal (has replaced the blue contract)
  2. Birth Certificate copy.
  3. National ID copy
  4. O Level Transcript or Certificate copy
  5. A Level Transcript or Certificate copy
  6. Degree transcript copy
  7. Degree certificate copy
  8. Payment of USD66 per student (training contract registration fee)

Requirements for a training officer

  1. Must be a member of ICAZ [CA(Z), AA(Z) OR PSPA(Z)] in good standing.
  2. Submit all registration documents to ICAZ.
  3. Certified assessor of ICAZ
